Caught Putin opponent Navalny on hunger strike

Alexei Navalny has gone on a hunger strike until he receives proper medical treatment. The well-known Russian opposition leader is imprisoned in a labour camp. He demands that a doctor visit him, according to a message on his Instagram account.

Navalny has previously complained of severe back pain, leg problems and a lack of medical care. Prison authorities would only give him two painkillers a day.

Navalny is in a penal colony about 100 kilometres from Moscow, serving a 2.5-year prison sentence. According to him, it was a political verdict. He returned from Germany at the beginning of this year, where he had been treated after being poisoned. According to Navalny, it was the work of the Kremlin.

His lawyers may visit him sporadically. That is a slight improvement from before. Then they had no access to their client at all.
