Tennis icon Roger Federer has lost the second game after his return. The 39-year-old Swiss lost in the Qatar Open’s quarterfinals in Doha in three sets to Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili: 6-3 1-6 5-7. Federer lost a match point in the third and deciding set.
The twenty-time grand slam champion underwent knee surgery last year and needed more than a year to recover. He has not played games since his elimination in the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2020.
Federer did win the first game on Wednesday after his long absence, albeit narrowly. He needed three sets against Briton Daniel Evans (7-6 (8) 3-6 7-5). The Swiss were placed second in Doha.
